SEMINAR 9
COURSE OUTLINE
Seminar 9 is a one semester 45 minute skinny that takes place during the first and second quarter of each school year. This is a class designed to provide support for selected 9th grade students as they transition from the middle school to the high school. Seminar 9 provides instruction and support in the following areas:
ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS
Development and daily use of homework, organization, and planning skills.
Learning how the high school operates.
Understanding and learning to follow the school’s rules (and what happens when you don’t).
Learning to ask for help when you need it--where to go and who to talk to.
Keeping track of “stuff”.
Managing your time.
Managing your locker.
Understanding the importance of attending school regularly and being on time.
Understanding your academic record.
Setting, achieving, and measuring goals.
Planning and preparing for the future.
STUDY SKILLS
Using improved organizational skills to help become a more productive student.
Believing in yourself and your ability as a student.
Understanding how you learn best (your learning style).
Learning how to stay on top of your assignments.
Understanding how to become a better note taker.
Understanding how to use and read a textbook and remembering what you have read.
Understanding how you study best.
Understanding test-taking skills.
Understanding you to be productive and do your share as a member of a group or a team.
Understanding when, where, and how to get help when you need it.
SELF-ADVOCACY
Learning to use Infinite Campus to keep track of assignments and grades.
Regularly communicating with your teacher about grades, assignments, and how you are doing in all your classes.
Regularly communicating with your parents about grades, assignments, and how you are doing in all your classes.
